Why I Built These Tools
When I was a vet tech, I watched owners struggle with the same questions over and over. How much should I feed my dog? Is this plant toxic? When is the next vaccine due? What size crate do I need? The answers are out there, scattered across dozens of websites, veterinary PDFs, and breed-specific forums. But nobody had pulled it all together into one place with tools that actually do the math for you.
So I built them. Every tool on PetsBlueprint is free, requires no account, and gives you an answer in seconds. They're based on veterinary guidelines, breed-specific data, and the kind of practical knowledge that comes from years of working with dogs. Here's what's available, organized by category.
Nutrition Tools
Food Calculator -- The tool I recommend most. Enter your dog's breed, weight, age, and activity level, and it calculates daily calorie needs and exact portion sizes for your specific food. No more guessing with the vague ranges on the back of the bag.
Treat Calculator -- Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories, but most people have no idea what that means in practice. This tool shows you exactly how many of a specific treat your dog can have per day without exceeding the limit.
Raw Feeding Calculator -- Raw diets require specific ratios of muscle meat, bone, organ meat, and vegetables. This calculator handles the math so you don't have to manage a spreadsheet. It adjusts for your dog's weight, activity level, and whether you're feeding a puppy or adult.
Toxic Food Checker -- A searchable database of foods that are dangerous for dogs, with severity ratings and symptoms. Covers everything from the obvious (chocolate, grapes) to the surprising (xylitol in peanut butter, macadamia nuts, cooked bones).
Weight Check -- A guided body condition scoring tool with visual references. It walks you through a hands-on assessment of your dog's fat coverage and gives you a score with actionable recommendations.
Health Tools
Medication Dosage -- Calculates safe doses for common OTC medications (Benadryl, Pepcid, Imodium, and others) based on your dog's weight. Always consult your vet first, but this gives you a reliable reference when they tell you to give Benadryl and you need to know how much.
Vaccination Schedule -- Maps out every vaccine your puppy or adult dog needs with timing, including core and optional vaccines. Customizable based on your dog's age, region, and lifestyle factors like boarding or dog park visits.
Heat Safety -- Calculates heat risk levels based on temperature, humidity, and your dog's breed. Brachycephalic breeds, senior dogs, and overweight dogs face higher risks. This tool tells you when it's safe to exercise and when to stay inside.
Dental Age Estimator -- Estimates your dog's approximate age based on dental condition. Especially useful for rescue and shelter dogs with unknown histories. It also flags dental concerns that warrant a vet visit.
Spay/Neuter Timeline -- Provides breed-specific timing recommendations for spay/neuter surgery based on current veterinary research. The optimal timing varies significantly by breed and size, and this tool explains why.
Plant Safety -- A searchable database of common household and garden plants with toxicity ratings for dogs. Includes symptoms, severity levels, and what to do if your dog ingests a toxic plant.
Flea & Tick Season Tracker -- Shows flea and tick activity levels based on your region and time of year. Helps you plan prevention schedules and know when to be extra vigilant with post-walk tick checks.
Sizing Tools
Crate Size Finder -- Recommends the right crate dimensions based on your dog's breed and projected adult size. Too big means your dog won't feel secure and may have housetraining setbacks. Too small is uncomfortable and potentially cruel.
Harness Size Guide -- Matches your dog's measurements (chest girth and weight) to the right harness size. A poorly fitting harness causes chafing, doesn't control pulling effectively, and can even restrict breathing.
Leash Length Guide -- Recommends leash lengths based on your intended use. Training, walking, hiking, and recall practice all call for different lengths. This tool explains the tradeoffs and helps you pick.
Lifestyle Tools
Dog Age Calculator -- Converts your dog's age to human-equivalent years using the updated logarithmic formula, not the outdated "multiply by 7" method. Small breeds age differently than large breeds, and this tool accounts for that.
Exercise Calculator -- Calculates daily exercise needs based on breed, age, weight, and health conditions. Adjusts for puppies (who need careful limits to protect growth plates) and seniors (who need lower-impact activity).
Sleep Calculator -- Shows normal sleep ranges for your dog's age and breed. Adult dogs sleep 12-14 hours per day, but puppies and seniors need more. Significant changes from your dog's baseline sleep pattern can indicate health issues.
Grooming Schedule -- Builds a personalized grooming calendar based on your dog's breed and coat type. Covers brushing frequency, bath schedule, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and professional grooming appointments.
Travel Checklist -- Generates a packing list and preparation checklist for traveling with your dog. Covers car trips, flights, hotel stays, and everything you need to handle before, during, and after the trip.
Quizzes and Assessments
Breed Finder Quiz -- Answer questions about your lifestyle, living space, activity level, and preferences to get personalized breed recommendations. The best starting point if you're thinking about getting a dog and don't know where to begin.
Breed Compare -- Compare any two breeds side by side across 15+ categories. Size, lifespan, exercise needs, grooming requirements, health risks, trainability, and family compatibility. Useful when you've narrowed your list to two or three options.
Anxiety Assessment -- Evaluates your dog's stress indicators through a structured questionnaire and provides actionable management recommendations. Covers separation anxiety, noise phobias, social anxiety, and generalized stress.
Puppy-Specific Tools
Puppy Cost Calculator -- Breaks down first-year and lifetime costs by breed, including food, veterinary care, gear, grooming, insurance, and emergency fund recommendations. The first-year cost surprises almost everyone.
Puppy Weight Predictor -- Estimates your puppy's adult weight based on current weight, age, and breed. Useful for planning gear purchases, understanding growth trajectories, and knowing what to expect.
Socialization Checklist -- A structured list of 50+ experiences your puppy should have before 16 weeks of age. Covers people, animals, surfaces, sounds, environments, and handling exercises. The socialization window closes fast, and this checklist makes sure you cover all the bases.
How to Get the Most Out of These Tools
A few suggestions from building and using these tools daily:
Bookmark your most-used tools. For most owners, that's the food calculator, exercise calculator, and weight check. You'll come back to these monthly.
Revisit as your dog ages. A puppy's needs are completely different from a senior's. Recalculate exercise, food, and sleep baselines at each life stage transition.
Use them at vet visits. Pull up your weight check history or vaccination schedule before your appointment. It gives your vet better data and makes the visit more productive.
Share with your household. If multiple people feed or exercise your dog, everyone should be working from the same numbers. The food calculator result taped to the pantry door has saved a lot of overfeeding in my house.
Every tool is free, always will be, and requires no sign-up. Bookmark the full tools page and use them whenever you need a quick answer backed by real data.
