Welcome to PetsBlueprint

Why I Started PetsBlueprint

If you've ever spent hours scrolling through Amazon, you aren't alone. Reading conflicting reviews is exhausting. That exact frustration is why I built PetsBlueprint.

I spent five years as a veterinary technician at a Portland, OR mixed-practice clinic. I realized most online dog gear lists were written by people who hadn't touched the products. What sealed it for me was reading a highly ranked review for a hiking harness. I knew from the clinic that this specific harness caused severe underarm chafing. I got tired of the terrible advice.

PetsBlueprint is the site I wished existed when I brought my own dogs home.

My Mission

To give every dog owner a clear, honest blueprint for raising a happy, healthy dog.

That breaks down into three things:

  • Honest gear reviews. I buy products with my own money. I test them with real dogs. Then I tell you exactly what works and what doesn't. No fluff.
  • Practical training guides. You'll get step-by-step instructions from experienced trainers. They're written for normal people who don't have six hours a day for obedience drills.
  • Health and nutrition guidance. This is information you can actually trust. When I worked at the clinic, I saw the daily results of bad internet advice. I consult with licensed veterinarians to help you make informed decisions about preventive care.

What You'll Find Here

I organize my content into four main categories:

Gear Reviews

I'm talking crates, beds, leashes, harnesses, toys, and bowls. I keep a massive spreadsheet of everything I've tested since 2019 (over 600 items and counting). Every review covers what holds up and what fails. When I need to test durability, I hand the item to my 2-year-old Australian shepherd, Maple. She destroys anything not rated for power chewers. If a toy survives her (like the West Paw Qwizl compared to a standard KONG), it's worth it. I link directly to Amazon so you can check current pricing.

Training

I cover everything from basic puppy obedience to leash reactivity and crate training. I break complex behaviors down into manageable steps. I focus strictly on positive reinforcement. Most vets I know recommend these exact techniques. They're heavily backed by current behavioral science.

Health and Nutrition

I review foods, build vaccination schedules, and tackle common health concerns. I've spent enough time in an animal hospital to know what really matters. Still, I always have licensed veterinarians review this content. It guarantees the information stays accurate and up to date.

Dog Lifestyle

This is the fun stuff. I share travel tips, dog park etiquette, and seasonal activities. Living with a dog should be enjoyable. It shouldn't be stressful. (Even when they roll in something unidentifiable right before a car ride).

Meet the Tester (That's Me)

I'm a dog person first and a writer second. I've raised puppies, fostered rescues, and navigated my fair share of emergency vet visits. I volunteer monthly at the Multnomah County Animal Shelter. Right now, I share my home with Maple and Benny. Benny is a 9-year-old lab/pit mix with hip dysplasia. He's my resident senior-gear expert.

My background spans veterinary medicine and product journalism. Here's the thing: I believe every dog deserves an owner who has access to reliable information.

A few things you should know about how I work:

  • I purchase most products myself. When a manufacturer sends me an item, I disclose it clearly.
  • I use Amazon affiliate links to keep the site running. These don't cost you anything extra. They just help me pay for the gear I test.
  • I don't accept payment for positive reviews. Ever. If a product is bad, I'll tell you. I'll flat out say, "I'd skip this if you have a heavy chewer."
  • I update my content regularly. Dog gear evolves quickly. After two weeks, a collar might look fine. Six months in, the stitching might fail. The honest downside of testing is that things wear out. I revisit my posts to keep them current.

What's Coming Next

Over the coming months, you can expect:
