Dog First Aid Kit

After five years in a vet clinic, I've seen exactly what happens when people aren't prepared for trail accidents. This kit covers everything from torn dewclaws to bee stings without taking up too much space.

Why We Picked These

Here's the thing about pre-packaged pet first aid kits. They're usually just human bandages stuffed in a paw-print bag. The ARCA Pet 40-Piece Kit is the rare exception that actually holds up to clinic standards. It gives you a solid baseline of cohesive bandages and proper gauze. I supplement it heavily, though. When Maple sliced her paw pad on a hike last summer, the Vetericyn Plus Wound Spray was what sealed it for me. It doesn't sting, which keeps her from thrashing. I also throw in Kwik Stop Styptic Powder (a mandatory staple from my vet tech days for nail-trimming bleeders) and standard Benadryl. You also need a real tick tool, not tweezers. The TickCheck Premium Tick Remover Kit is totally worth it. It grips the head perfectly. I'd skip this bulky setup if you only ever walk around a well-paved city block. The honest downside to the ARCA bag is that it takes up real estate in a daypack. I end up transferring the essentials into a smaller dry bag for long trails. Still, between Benny's older-dog scrapes and Maple's total lack of self-preservation, keeping this exact kit in my car has saved me several panicked vet trips.
