Dog Winter Weather Kit

I've tested dozens of winter coats and boots since 2019, and this kit actually keeps out the freezing Portland slush. Here's what holds up to icy sidewalks and sub-freezing morning walks.

Why We Picked These

Here's the thing about winter gear. Most of it is just cute, not functional. I spent three winters testing coats on Benny (whose hip dysplasia acts up in the cold) and Maple (who treats clothes like chew toys). The Ruffwear Powder Hound is worth it. It actually covers the belly. That's where dogs lose the most heat (something I saw constantly back at the clinic). I'd skip this if you have a thick-coated breed, but for short-haired dogs, it holds up much better than the cheaper fleece alternatives. When Portland freezes over completely, the Hurtta Summit Parka steps in. It provides massive insulation for sub-zero days. For paws, you need serious protection from rock salt. Maple refuses boots. I use Musher's Secret wax instead. It works. The honest downside is it leaves faint greasy prints on hardwood floors. If your dog actually tolerates footwear, the QUMY boots stay on through deep snow. What sealed it for me was the K&H heated bed. It eases Benny's stiff joints after a cold walk. It's an investment, but seeing him sleep through a freezing night makes it worth it.
