How I Evaluate Dog Food
After five years as a vet tech and testing over 40 brands since 2019, I evaluate dog food on four criteria: AAFCO compliance, ingredient quality, WSAVA guidelines adherence, and how my own dogs respond. I feed Benny (85-pound senior with hip dysplasia) a joint-support formula and Maple (50-pound high-energy Aussie) a performance kibble. Different dogs need different food.
Best Overall: Purina Pro Plan
Purina Pro Plan is the food most veterinary nutritionists recommend. It's made by a company that employs full-time board-certified veterinary nutritionists, funds peer-reviewed feeding trials, and meets WSAVA guidelines. That's a higher bar than 95% of boutique brands.
The Shredded Blend line mixes crunchy kibble with tender shredded pieces. Dogs eat it enthusiastically. Benny has been on the beef and rice formula for eight months with consistently solid stools and a healthy coat.

Why it wins: WSAVA-compliant, backed by decades of research, and dogs actually like eating it. The price-per-pound is reasonable for the quality.
Best for Large Breeds: Purina Pro Plan Large Breed
Large breeds need controlled calcium and phosphorus levels to protect growing joints. This formula delivers 26% protein with added glucosamine and omega-3s specifically for large breed joint health.

Best for Sensitive Stomachs: Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach
If your dog has loose stools, gas, or frequent vomiting, this is the first food to try. Hill's uses prebiotic fiber for digestive health and easy-to-digest chicken as the primary protein. It's the sensitive stomach formula most vets I know reach for first.

The honest downside: It's more expensive per pound than Purina Pro Plan. If your dog doesn't have digestive issues, you're paying a premium for benefits they don't need.
Best for Puppies: Blue Buffalo Life Protection Puppy
Puppies need DHA for brain development, higher protein for growth, and appropriately balanced calcium. This formula checks all three boxes with deboned chicken as the first ingredient and DHA from fish meal. I've recommended this to every puppy owner who asks.

Best for Small Breeds: Royal Canin Small Adult
Small dogs have faster metabolisms and need more calories per pound. Royal Canin's small breed formula uses smaller kibble pieces that tiny jaws can actually chew properly. It meets WSAVA guidelines and is backed by breed-specific research.

Best for Allergies: Blue Buffalo Basics Limited Ingredient
Food allergies typically involve protein sources. This limited ingredient formula uses a novel protein (salmon) with minimal additional ingredients to reduce allergen exposure. It's not the cheapest option, but it's effective for elimination diets.

Best Budget: Diamond Naturals
Diamond Naturals delivers solid nutrition at a price point that won't strain your budget. Wild-caught salmon as the primary protein, added probiotics, and no corn, wheat, or soy fillers. It's not a WSAVA-guideline brand, but the ingredient quality punches above its price.

Best Wet Food: Blue Buffalo Homestyle Recipe
Wet food works as a topper, a mixer for picky eaters, or a standalone meal for dogs with dental issues who can't chew kibble. Blue Buffalo's Homestyle Recipe uses whole vegetables you can actually see in the can.

Red Flags to Avoid
- "Grain-free" marketing: The FDA investigated links between grain-free diets and heart disease (DCM). Unless your dog has a diagnosed grain allergy, there's no benefit.
- No AAFCO statement: If the bag doesn't say "complete and balanced," it's not a complete diet.
- Exotic proteins without reason: Kangaroo, bison, and venison sound premium but offer no nutritional advantage. They're useful only for elimination diets.
- Brands that don't employ veterinary nutritionists: Ask the company. If they can't name one, they're formulating by spreadsheet.
