What sealed it for me: Zero monthly cost. I attached one to Benny's collar with a $4 silicone holder. In urban and suburban areas, the network density means I get location updates every few minutes without paying a cent.
The honest downside: It's not real-time GPS. It relies on nearby iPhones to relay location. In rural areas, on hiking trails, or anywhere without foot traffic, you may get no updates for hours. My Recommendation
If money isn't the issue: Get the Fi Series 3+. The integrated collar design is the cleanest solution, and the escape alerts are the fastest I've tested. The subscription is reasonable for the peace of mind.
If you're on a budget or have a low-risk dog: The AirTag is a no-brainer for $16 per tracker. No subscription, no charging for a year, and it works great in populated areas. I keep one on both my dogs as a backup even though I use dedicated GPS trackers.
If health monitoring matters: The Tractive wins. The vital signs data is genuinely useful, especially for senior dogs. Benny wears one full-time now.
For escape-prone breeds like Huskies or Aussies, I'd pair a Fi or Tractive with an AirTag as a backup. Belt and suspenders.
