Which dental chew should you choose?
Greenies Original is worth comparing if its wheat-based recipe fits your dog's diet and you want clearly published serving calories. WHIMZEES Brushzees offers a plant-based recipe for dogs nine months and older. OraVet adds delmopinol, an ingredient the manufacturer describes as creating a protective coating on teeth.
All three have products on the Veterinary Oral Health Council's accepted-products list. Greenies Canine Dental Chews and WHIMZEES Brushzees have accepted claims for plaque and tartar; OraVet's listed claim is tartar. That does not make one the best chew for every dog, or prove that one brand outperforms the other two.
How we compared them: This guide uses US manufacturer size charts, feeding instructions, nutrition information, the VOHC list and exact Amazon pack listings, checked September 24, 2026. It is a research-based comparison; we have not run a head-to-head feeding trial. The size finder matches published age and weight ranges. It cannot assess allergies, dental disease or whether your dog will chew safely.
Why the exact size matters
“Small” and “Medium” mean different things across brands. For example, a 30 lb adult dog falls within Greenies Regular, Brushzees Medium and OraVet Medium. OraVet Small is labeled for 10–24 lb and should not be substituted because the pouch costs less.
At some boundaries, the labels overlap: Greenies Petite and Regular both include 25 lb. OraVet's published ranges leave gaps between 9 and 10 lb and between 24 and 25 lb. The finder flags these cases rather than rounding a dog into a size. Confirm the current label with the manufacturer or your vet if the choice is unclear.
Choose the whole, appropriate chew. Do not cut a larger chew to turn it into a smaller size. The manufacturer's directions take priority over a calculator or a breed-size label.
Ingredients and calories: what to check
- Greenies Original: The linked product lists wheat flour, wheat gluten, gelatin and poultry flavor. Its current feeding guides give 25 kcal for Teenie, 52 for Petite, 88 for Regular and 142 for Large. Check your pack if the recipe differs. Sources: Teenie, Petite, Regular and Large.
- WHIMZEES Brushzees: The Wellness recipe includes potato starch, glycerin, cellulose and sweet lupin meal. Medium and larger also list calcium carbonate. The manufacturer's nutrient profile distinguishes solid XS/Small from white-tipped Medium/Large/XL Brushzees; the size table above follows those entries. Plant-based does not mean suitable for every allergy or elimination diet.
- OraVet: Boehringer Ingelheim identifies delmopinol, poultry flavor and a vanilla aroma. The linked Small pack also lists pork protein, wheat and soy. We could not verify current manufacturer calories for every size, so the table asks you to check the pack rather than filling in estimates.
These are ingredient highlights, not complete ingredient lists. Read the current pack and include chew calories in your dog's daily food allowance. A lower-calorie, undersized chew is not a suitable shortcut.
Which is the best value?
Use the cost calculator above with the price of the correct size. Compare like-for-like terms: a subscription offer and a one-time purchase are different prices.
For example, a hypothetical $12 pack containing 12 chews costs $1 per chew and $30 for 30 days of use. Starting from an empty cupboard, you would actually buy three packs for $36, with six chews left for the next month. The calculator shows both figures. This example is arithmetic, not a current product price.
For a first purchase, a smaller pack can limit waste while you find out whether your dog accepts the chew. Consider larger packs once the product suits your dog and your routine. Confirm the pack count, seller, final price and availability on Amazon before ordering.
Before starting a daily chew
Give only the appropriately sized product as directed, supervise chewing and provide fresh water. If your dog swallows chews whole, ask your vet about another home-care approach. Chews are not treatment for painful teeth or existing gum disease.
Can a chew replace brushing?
